The deadline for application is Monday 9th November at 5 pm. All applicants are required to clearly indicate the positions they are applying for.

The Electoral Commission declined to comment on the remunerations that each of these positions attract. Even so, there has to be some money so we encourage you to apply if you fit the below criteria. In addition, it’s a good opportunity to gain experience which may come in handy when applying for future posts. People who have worked with the commission before may have an added advantage. Here are the qualifications:

Qualifications for Clerks:
  • Must be a full time student
  • Must be a Dekutso member
  • Must exhibit leadership ability and experience
  • Participation in past electoral process will be an added advantage

Qualifications for Security Officers:
  • Must be a full time student
  • Must be a Dekutso member
  • Must exhibit leadership ability and experience
  • Participation in past electoral process will be an added advantage
  • Must be physically fit
Qualifications for Debate Moderators:
  • Must be a full time student
  • Should be conversant with the Dekutso constitution – responsibilities of a leader as stipulated in the Dekutso constitution
  • Must have been a Dekutso member for at least 2 years
  • Must be non-partisan
  • Must be fluent in English and Kiswahili
  • Should not be vying for any other position such as delegate or student council

Those of you who have had the opportunity to attend past debates know just how “entertaining” they can be. Last year, by the time the debate was being held, the winning coalition already knew that they had enough delegates to win. The debate was therefore a sham that was not worth attending. It was a show of whose drunk supporters could scream the loudest. The moderators had quite a tough job trying to make sense of the the whole thing. Unless the ECK plans to do things differently this time round, is there honestly need to hold a debate? Tell us what you think about the debate in the comments section at the bottom of the page and stand a chance to win.

Debates are the surest platforms to vet a leaders social abilities and handling of a tricky situation. It is where you are intentionally pissed off and expected to balance between shouting and cursing or rather remain calm and be intelligent in answering.
So basically I see they are a MUST.
