Yesterday, on Sunday 1st December, a gang of locals got into a room in a residential area outside Maseno University and raped 2 out of 3 girls. They had first broken into a different room and stolen everything they could from among the belongings of an absent male student before proceeding to the room next door. It is here that the rape incident happened. The 3rd girl – upon resisting – was brutally assaulted, with her hand getting chopped off. The disturbing photo of the girl’s chopped off hand is at the end of this post.

There have been a series of muggings and robberies around the University before but the school administration and the area security personnel have done little to better the safety of students.

After yesterday’s incident, Maseno comrades decided that they couldn’t take it any more and resorted to the only channel that seems to work for comrades nowadays – a demonstration.

This prompted the Maseno University Senate to be convened at 7pm, after which they gave a 30 minute window for all students to vacate the university premises.

In the just concluded week, there were other incidents of students being robbed and one of them even being physically assaulted. There are also reports of a watchman being killed recently. On Tuesday, a student was attacked and everything he had was stolen. The student later found his printer dumped in the nearby Mabungo forest.

The locals, commonly referred to as “Wanyore” by the students, are said to be behind the beatings, muggings and robberies that students living off campus habitually suffer. This rampant insecurity has existed for years and the students there have had to accept it as part of their lives, despite the presence of a police post that shares a fence with the university.

Netizens took to twitter to call for action from the government regarding the insecurity at Maseno. They pointed out the fact that it had been wreck less for the VC – Prof Julius Nyabundi – to send first years out of the campus into an area that was notorious for its insecurity at night. Others pointed out the significance of the rape incident happening during the 16 day campaign against Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV)

Nadia Mukami, an alumnus of Maseno, also took to twitter to protest the insecurity in Maseno

The university is now closed, with students set to return on 16th December to finish their exams.

Evidence of the shocking brutality
