Menstruation???

More than two billion people have menstruation, yet much of the world is ashamed to talk about it. On Let’s Talk about it today, we tackle the ‘Forbidden’ topic- The Mystery of the Menstrual Cycle as well as the pros and cons of sex during your period.

In a layman’s language, menstruation is a natural biological process that keeps the human race going. It is basic science and definitely an integral part of what we might refer to as ‘essential knowledge.’

It is heartbreaking to accept the fact that many people are not quite sure what it involves. In the best cases, confusion about periods can cause embarrassment and, in the worst cases, create harmful conditions for girls and women. The menstrual cycle not only encompasses the period, but also the daily hormonal changes that can cause symptoms like headaches and cramps.

Can You have sex during your period?

Well, I am going to address the gist of this article- The pros and cons of sex during your period- to the best of my knowledge and try as much as possible not to directly refer to or attack a specific individual.

I have had several chances to interact with a lot of men and boys, both abroad and in Africa, thanks to my career in nursing, and a lot of them have always complained that girls or women to be specific, have used menstruation as an excuse of not having sex.

Truth be told, unless a woman is especially squeamish, there’s no need to avoid sex during your period. Though period sex can be a bit messy, it is safe. And, having sex when you are menstruating can actually offer a few advantages, including relief from menstrual cramps.

It should be noted, however, that not all women fancy the idea of having sex during their period. On this note, I would like to call for all the men to respect women who feel that way. Besides, from my own experience, a girl or woman will always have almost ultimate control of your sex life.

This is the bitter truth. A bitter pill to swallow.

Here are a few advantages of having sex during your period

Interesting. Right? That there are benefits of having sex during your period probably sounds crazy, but trust me the content herein will probably be life-changing for some or most of you. Here are a few reasons why sex during your period might not be that bad at all.

1. Relief from cramps: Orgasms may relieve menstrual cramps. Menstrual cramps are a result of your uterus contracting to release its lining. When you have an orgasm, the muscles of your uterus also contract. That release should bring some relief from period cramps.

Sex also triggers the release of chemicals called endorphins. These are hormones per say, and they have an effect of making you feel good. Another advantage of having sex during your period is that the activity occupies your mind, which may help take it off your menstrual discomfort.

2.Shorter periods

Having sex may make your periods shorter. The explanation here is pretty simple. Muscle contractions during an orgasm push out the uterine contractions faster. That could result in shorter periods. A good thing, right?

Well, I guess this depends on whether you consider longer periods a blessing or not. Feel free to comment on this.

3. Increased sex drive

Your libido changes throughout your menstrual cycle, thanks to hormonal fluctuations. While many women say their sex drive increases during ovulation, which is about two weeks before your period, others report feeling more turned on during their period.

4.Natural Lubrication

Am sure you already feel that this is gross- blood as a natural lubricant!! Well, you better come to terms with the interesting fact that you might not need your KY during your period.

5. It might relieve your headache.

Statistics reveal that about half of women with migraine headaches get them during their periods. Although most women with menstrual migraines avoid sex during their attacks, many of those who do have sex say it partially or completely relieves their headaches.

What are the Possible Side effects?

The biggest downside to having sex during your period is the mess. Blood can get on you, your partner, and the sheets, especially if you have a heavy flow. Bleeding can make you feel self- conscious. Anxiety over making a mess can take some or all of the fun out of sex.

Another downside is the risk of spreading a Sexually Transmitted infection or virus, like HIV or Hepatitis. Consider using a condom here, doesn’t matter whether male or female condom, as it will reduce the risk of spreading or catching an STI.

I know you are wondering whether female condoms exist, well they do. They have been there for a surprisingly long time. The problem is that most of you men are so busy doing other things that you barely notice when your sex partner is wearing one.

If you plan to have sex during your period and you’re wearing a tampon, you need to remove it beforehand. A forgotten tampon can get pushed so far up into your vagina during sex that you’ll need to see a doctor to have it removed. I have seen one of these being removed, trust me this isn’t pretty.

Takeaway; Don’t let your period put a halt to your sex life. If you do a little prep work, sex can be just as enjoyable during those five or so days as it is the rest of the month. You might be surprised to find that sex is even more exciting during your period.

Am hoping I have covered the gist of my article, as I indicated earlier. Thank you for taking the time to read my work. Feel free to leave a comment, let me know what you think about this topic.
