Maseno has been given seven days to comply with an order from NEMA that requires the university to stop discharging untreated sewage into a nearby river. Failure to comply with this request will lead to the university's closure. Maseno University does not have a sewage treatment plant and have been polluting the river for the last 28 years.

The looming university closure comes as students were last week sent home halfway through their exams. The Maseno Senate sent students packing after they demonstrated to protest rising insecurity around the university. The demonstration was sparked off by a rape incident which also saw a female student's hand being cut off after she resisted rape. See more about the incident in this article.

The students are supposed to go back to school on 14th, this coming weekend, and resume their exams on 16th. However, if the university's administration should fail to comply with the NEMA order, the university will be shut down right when students are supposed to resume their exams.

After the strike, the lecturers claimed that the "alleged rape reports" were an excuse and that in real sense, the students were protesting a proposed institution wide installation of CCTV cameras. Students were reportedly bitter because they could no longer cheat in exams after the installation of cameras, according to the lecturers.

There are also reports that the practice of exchanging sex for grades has become rampant within the school. Also, some students report to have been inexplicably excluded from the graduation list for the upcoming December 13th graduation. The affected students are threatening to go to court to stop the graduation.
