UON students started a riot last evening after the death of one of their comrades, Kyttes Ondeng alias Ras. Ras is said to have been beaten and dumped by security officials at the campus, who claimed that he was a thief. He was later taken by Good Samaritans to a Nairobi Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. UON comrades have long complained against Lavington Security and have been pushing for their replacement.

The comrades took to burning some abandoned hostels as a way of expressing their anger. Videos circulating online also show them setting fire to the Student Welfare Authority offices, which house most student documents. As a result of the mayhem, riot police were called in. They engaged in running battles with the comrades along State House Road and Valley Road.

The riot police later made their way into some of the Ladies’ Hostels, where they began forcing entry into female comrades’ rooms as shown in the video below. Similar situations in the past have led to female students being raped with the perpetrators usually going away Scot-free.
